Swachh Survekshan Survey: List of cleanest cities in India released by Centre

The recently conducted Swachh Survekshan Survey of 2017, assessing progress made by municipal authorities with regard to cleanliness, has Indore and Bhopal occupying the first two places and Visakhapatnam of Andhra Pradesh making it to the third spot. It was a moment of pride for the people of Madhya Pradesh, with Indore and Bhopal coming in at the top of the list. This list was based on the survey certifying all the cleanliness efforts put in by the municipalities in 434 cities of India.

Gonda of Uttar Pradesh stood last, followed by Bhusawal of Maharshtra. Conducted as part of the government’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission), the survey ranked Mysore in Karnataka fifth, down from its position of number one last year. The campaign was launched in 2014, with the objective of making India cleaner and open-defecation free by 2019, which also marks the 150th birth anniversary of the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi.

The state with the highest population in India, Uttar Pradesh, turned out to be the most unclean, with fifty of the 62 of its cities that were surveyed ranked below 300. Union Minister for Urban Development Venkaiah Naidu, on announcing the results, stated that the overall result has been very satisfactory and that most cities have only shown an improvement since 2014, when the Swachh Bharat mission was first launched.

The municipal corporations, independent assessors, and general feedback from the public contributed a lot to this survey.

The evaluation of these cities was done by taking into consideration five parameters:

1. Waste collection

2. Solid-waste management

3. Construction of toilets

4. Sanitation strategies

5. Behaviour change communication.
