Punit confirmed the news on his blog,

I am moving to India for the next few years to help build Flipkart into a world class product and engineering company in the capacity of their Chief Product Officer.

Punit will lead the product definition and innovation charter for Flipkart consumer products, marketplace and transaction platform. In this role, Punit will be driving Product Strategy, Design and Product Marketing functions to build world class user interface and product solutions. He believes that the next world-class technology company will come out of India, and that company will be Flipkart.

Sachin Bansal, Co-founder and Flipkart Group CEO said,

Flipkart has always been a pioneer in innovative solutions. Punit will help accelerate our innovation agenda in building products that consumers love.

An undergraduate (B.Tech) in Electronics and Communications Engineering from the NIT Kurukshetra, a masters degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Wyoming and an MBA from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania; Punit has spent the past few months contemplating on the next steps of his career. He thought that after eight years in Google, the only gig that would make sense is one with an overwhelming sense of potential, and of an impact that could span billions and move countries. Flipkart fits in the description and eventually became his choice too.

Mukesh Bansal, Head of Flipkart Commerce Platform believes that Punit's deep experience in launching successful tech-related products and his extensive relationships in the US and abroad will help Flipkart stay on the cutting edge.

In his last visit to Bangalore, Punit observed that the energy in the city feels like the Valley, and Flipkart with a footprint of millions is at the forefront. He sees it as an opportunity to create a big impact.

My goal and mandate will be to help build the world’s best product company with a global ambition. Over time, we will build programs to attract the best talent to Bangalore and also establish a significant presence back home in the Valley. The overwhelming scope of the task feels like the right next step in my journey, and its success will depend on a lot of things including your support.
