This article is a part of the SparkTheRise campaign for which YourStory is an online media partner

Mahindra Spark the Rise works as an online platform for change-makers across India to connect with one another, collaborate and exchange ideas, procure volunteers and donors, and to compete for monthly grants from the organization. This year’s campaign saw social entrepreneurs from all over India share their insight for reinventing the ‘India’ inside India. Their are multiple rounds via which projects and Ideas are chosen and then brought to life.

Here we look at the 4 "Idea Winners" from the 3rd Round of Mahindra SparkTheRise:

plastc bags
1) Eradicating Polythene Bags

Idea champion: Islam Hussain

I have used an innovative idea for making consumer friendly paper bags, I have used double layer of standard size full length used news paper, before pasting the layers of newspaper together to form the surface of the bag, a parallel horizontal 1- 2 mm thin gunny rope (depends on bag size) is fixed and pasted in round shape in center of both sides. The both sides are pasted by gum and the rope is let loose 20 cm long from up side, as a handle. and 10 cm from tale side. The open rope in the tale side is tied with a knot before sealing the bag with gum from below. For easy and smooth production of paper bags, pasting of layers is done a day prior to final knotting tiding/pasting. In this technique load can be easily carried just because gunny rope is supporting to double layer of paper, that’s why this bag become more useful and durable.

2) Generating power via frictional energy

Idea Champion: Ivaturi Umamaheswar

I would like to suggest a model for generation of power through frictional energy. The concept is all about generating power through frictional energy from fast moving (heavy or light) vehicles on highways, without causing any damage to the vehicles. The process is as under: Massive fly wheels are installed beneath the road at selected points on highways. These wheels are placed in such a way that the frictional energy generated by the moving vehicles converts into mechanical energy and rotates these massive fly wheels through the following mechanism. These massive fly wheels in turn rotate the dynamo attached to them and produce power. Through the distribution system this power can be supplied to the near by villages/towns.
